SLOW FOOD SEASONAL DINNER

“Wild Mushrooms from Yunnan”

Location:  Hong Kong Bankers’ Club,

43/F, Gloucester Tower, The Landmark

Date/Time: 7pm Tuesday the 28th August 2012

Imagine for the moment that you are in Yunnan right now!

You are standing in Lijiang's central Zhongyi market, where baskets overflow with Matsutake, Porcini and Chanterelle, and plenty more besides which are unidentifiable.

Can you smell the mushrooms?

There's a heightened sense of anticipation amongst the shoppers.  There's been plenty of rain, some crashing thunderstorms, and some rays of sunshine too - presenting perfect conditions for the foraging of wild mushrooms.

Yunnan people love their mushrooms, and while some can fetch over a thousand Renminbi per kilo, there's some within the reach of every family.  But if you cannot afford to buy them at the market, you simply have to take a trek up the mountainside with a basket on your back.  Dried ones are perhaps used for soups in the winter, but are not highly prized compared with the fresh ones in summer.

Slow Food Hong Kong is delighted to be able to partake in the enjoyment of some of some of these seasonal mushrooms with this special dinner at the Bankers' Club.

Slow Food Hong Kong’s Convivium leader Annabel Jackson will share with us her recent foraging experience outside Kunming, her cooking mushroom’s experience in Dali, and her eating mushroom’s experience in Shangri-La.
